For establishing, peace, harmony and stability in the Planet, the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), at the begining of the millennium i.e 1st January 2000, were launched, which range from halving extreme poverty rates, to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of December 2015, form a blueprint agreed, to by all the world's countries and all the world's leading development institutions. They have, in fact, galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world's poorest. The UN has worked, with National Governments, Diplomats, Civil Societies, Academicians, Universities and Other Partners, to build on the momentum generated by the MDGs and carry on, with an ambitious post-2015, development agenda.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), were eight international development goals for the end year of the 2015, that had been established following the Millennium Summit of the United Nations in 2000, at the beginning of the Century, following the adoption of the United Nations Millennium Declaration. These were based on the OECD DAC International Development Goals agreed by Development Ministers in the "Shaping the 21st Century Strategy". The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) succeeded the MDGs in 2016. All 191 United Nations member states, and at least 22 international organizations, were committed to help achieve the following Millennium Development Goals by the end of the year 2015:

(1) To eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
(2) To achieve universal primary education
(3) To promote gender equality and empower women
(4) To reduce child mortality
(5) To improve maternal health
(6) To combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
(7) To ensure environmental sustainability
(8) To develop a global partnership for development

United Nations SDGs
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals, designed as a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". The SDGs were set up in the begining of 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by the end of the year 2030. They are included in a UN Resolution called the 2030 Agenda or what is colloquially known as Agenda 2030. The SDGs were developed in the Post-2015 Development Agenda as the Future Global Development Framework to succeed the Millennium Development Goals, which ended in December 2015.

The 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are:
(1) No Poverty
(2) Zero Hunger
(3) Good Health and Well-being
(4) Quality Education
(5) Gender Equality
(6) Clean Water and Sanitation
(7) Affordable and Clean Energy
(8) Decent Work and Economic Growth
(9) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
(10) Reducing Inequality
(11) Sustainable Cities and Communities
(12) Responsible Consumption and Production
(13) Climate Action
(14) Life Below Water
(15) Life On Land
(16) Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
(17) Partnerships for the Goals.

Though the goals are broad and interdependent, two years later (6 July 2017) the SDGs were made more "actionable" by a UN Resolution adopted by the General Assembly. The resolution identifies specific targets for each goal, along with indicators that are being used to measure progress towards, each target. The year by which the target is meant to be achieved is usually between 2020 and 2030. For some of the targets, no end date is given.

IISD-CMI is working with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
IISD-CMI engaged in, present day status review, policy analysis and translating SDGs into actions, along with UN, Governments, Crediable Think Tanks and the Communities. Kindly refer IISD-CMI's 51 Focus Areas and 15 National Campaigns at our website iisdindia.in. IISD-CMI have launched a decade long action for the United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to unfold the present day challenges to achieve an equitable and a just world, which is full of hope, opportunity, offering enough social justice, environmental protection, with adequate job, employment and sustainability livelihood options for each of us.

To facilitate monitoring, a variety of tools exist to track and visualize progress towards the goals. All intention is to make data more available and easily understood. For example, the online publication SDG-Tracker, launched in June 2018, presents available data across all indicators. The SDGs pay attention to multiple cross-cutting issues, like gender equity, education, and culture cut across all of the SDGs. There were serious impacts and implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on all 17 SDGs in the year 2020.

The UN Sustainable Development Report (formerly the SDG Index & Dashboards) is a global assessment of countries' progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. (2021): The Decade of Action for the Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainable Development Report 2021. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
